  South Lancs/Cheshire 3 | April 17th | Parkonians 49 v Knutsford 10
Match report by Robin Maxwell

Knutsford travelled to the Wirral on Saturday on another bright day of sunshine.

However, from the start it was clear that the vast majority of the team's minds were back in their home town as Parkonians started on the front foot. The home side quickly got on the scoresheet with a well taken try after their back-line worked their way through a very leaky Knutsford defence to score.

Parkonians doubled their tally soon after, and it looked like it was going to be a long day in the baking heat for the men in blue. Eventually Knutsford started to get some shape to their game, and with some good performances up front from Robertson and Barnes, the away side began to provide a platform for their back-line. But it was not to be Knutsford's day, and despite fantastic distribution from debutant Crawford at scrum half, they could not punish the well drilled Parkonian team.

Indeed, it was Parkonians who would score again before the half was over with another two tries as the Knutsford pack found themselves under pressure in the set piece.

The second half began much like the first, and Parkonians put the game beyond all doubt with four more tries, many as a result of a poor defensive line from Knutsford.

As the end of season game petered out, Knutsford managed a couple of consolation tries to bring a little touch of dignity back to what was generally a miserable day for them. First, Jones went over the whitewash, after some strong running and rucking from the pack.

Shortly after, James jinked his way through the Parkonians defence to score, avoiding an attempted trip from the Park prop on the way.

In the closing minutes, Knutsford welcomed back former captain Fishburn from injury, who showed what the team had been missing with some trademark rumbles up the park.

All in all a day to forget for the Knutsford boys, and with one game remaining the team will be determined to finish on a high, with many of the players looking to make amends for this poor performance.

  South Lancs/Cheshire 3 | April 10th | Knutsford 14 v Linley 15
Match report by Robin Maxwell

Knutsford entertained Linley on Saturday on a bright spring afternoon. Knutsford entered the game in buoyant mood following back to back victories and were looking to avenge a poor performance in the previous league meeting between the sides.

The opening stages of the match were dominated by the boot, with both sides looking to gain territorial advantage. Knutsford’s ability to turn the ball over and with James kicking well Knutsford were able to keep the away side out of their 22. A lapse in concentration by the home side allowed the Linley scrum half to break down the wing and he was unlucky not to score, placing a foot in touch after rounding the Knutsford cover defence.

Linley continued to press as the first half continued but the Knutsford defence was well marshalled by stand in captain, Howard Dunkerley. Linley’s efforts were finally rewarded after 25 minutes, as they crashed over to score an unconverted try. Knutsford responded well and began to carry the ball strongly. Several powerful runs from the returning Higgins gave Knutsford the impetus they needed. Knutsford now had a footing in the game and following a break by Page, they were presented with an opportunity to reduce the score, but James pulled a 40 metre penalty to the left of the sticks.

The remainder of the first half was dominated by the forwards, however Knutsford were unlucky not to score following an excellent interchange between the forwards and the backs. Knutsford quickly moved the ball across the width of the pitch and hooker Kemp was presented with the chance to break on the outside. Unfortunately for the home side Linley were able to scramble their defence and he was dragged down 5 metres short.

Knutsford looked to continue their improvement in the second half, but fell further behind within 5 minutes of the restart. Linley scored a converted try and were now 12 points ahead. Knutsford were now having to chase the game and were beginning to take more risks. Walker, Crawford and Jones looked to get more involved and started to make significant breaks through the midfield.

The introduction of Elleray seemed to benefit the home side, with a clear increase in the tempo. Knutsford were rewarded for their endeavour on the hour mark with Walker crossing for a converted score. The try came following some strong forward work close to the Linley line presenting Walker with the smallest of gaps to step through and score and bring Knutsford within one score.

Knutsford continued to press and were able to bring on further replacements. Barnes returned from suspension to replace Fuller, who had impressed starting his first game at flanker. Former captain Walton returned following a lay off stretching back to last season and brought experience and much needed bulk to the Knutsford pack. Barnes looked desperate to impress on his return and immediately teamed up with his partner in crime, Snook, the pair began to terrorise the opposition and their determined and abrasive manner was successful in presenting Knutsford with turn over ball.

Knutsford were now in the ascendance and looked capable of winning the game. James made a superb break from within his own 22. He was able to run unimpeded to the half way line before attempting to feed Hamilton as the winger approached. The home team thought that the speedster was in to score but they were called back for a forward pass. Knutsford were becoming more frustrated by their inability to convert several decent scoring opportunities and this lead to the award of a penalty to Linley, which they converted to extended their lead to 15-7.

Knutsford now faced an up hill struggle to get a result from the game. They continued to press and with around 10 minutes remaining they were awarded a kickable penalty. Lack of experience and poor communication meant that Knutsford elected to run the ball in an attempt to score a converted try. Linley almost immediately stole the ball and Knutsford were punished for their greed.

Despite this set back, the home side pressed and with 2 minutes to go Walker stepped through two tacklers and capped of another good personal performance with his second score of the day. Elleray converted but Knutsford ran out of time and were unable to create any further opportunities as Linley retained possession and saw out the final moments.

Knutsford will look for a more clinical display next week and take the scoring opportunities they create, as they travel to Parkonians, 3pm kick off.

  Raging Bull Cup | April 3rd | KNUTSFORD 8 v Ruskin Drive 28
Match report by Robin Maxwell

Following the tragic untimely death of Tommy Blake, there was a large turnout from club members and other friends of Tommy to observe one minute’s silence prior to the Kasuals’ quarter final cup clash with Ruskin Park 2s.

Unfortunately, despite the great home support, which included many Juniors who had entertained the crowd with their own pre-match mini-tournament, the Kasuals’ cup run came to an abrupt end as they lost 8-20.

The first half started well and the Kasuals dominated the early physical battles with James Whittaker and Colin Barrie the outstanding combatants. However, despite the early pressure, Ruskin Park took the lead with a long distance penalty kick and then completely against the run of play they extended their lead with an opportunistic try.

Despite falling behind, the Kasuals continued to pile on the pressure and were awarded a rare penalty which was duly despatched by their impressive fly half, Andrew Russell.

With ten minutes to play in the first half and trailing 3-10, the Kasuals launched a sustained series of forward drives and much to the delight of the home supporters, the club’s most prolific try scorer, Dave Owen (aka “Rhino”) powered over the line with most of the Ruskin Park pack in attendance. 8-10 at half time and with the Ruskin Park open side flanker having seen red following a head-butt on winger Paul Ritchie, the Kasuals were in confident mood for the second half.

Unfortunately, the kasuals lost their forward dominance in the second half and starved of the ball, there were few options for the impressive Kasual back division. Despite some powerful runs from Nigel Muirhead and Chris Edmonds, the Ruskin Park line was rarely troubled and sadly, the Kasuals conceded far too many penalties which proved costly. Further, two consecutive yellow cards for the kasuals deprived them of the extra man advantage and the game eventually slipped beyond their grasp in the final minutes with a second Ruskin Park try.

Although disappointed not to have produced a better display for the home fans it has nevertheless been a good cup run for the Kasuals and losing to the in-form and a very strong boys from St Helens’ is no disgrace. The kasuals now look forward to concentrating on the last fixture of the season when they compete in the Chester Vets’ tournament on Saturday 24th April.

  South Lancs/Cheshire 3 | 27th March | KNUTSFORD 71 v Port Sunlight 0
Match report by Robin Maxwell

Knutsford recorded an emphatic win on Saturday - a club record victory, and a performance that every player could be proud of.

Knutsford got off to the perfect start, when after some excellent build up play, recent recruit Williams went over for his first try in KRFC colours.

However, this was to be a wake up call for the opposition and Port Sunlight attacked from the kick off and started gain ground and mount some pressure up front. This was looking dangerous for the home side, but when Port tried to shift the ball out their line, the Knutsford backs rushed the defence, Port rushed their passes, and Crawford read the situation perfectly to intercept a pass, run half the pitch and score beneath the posts.

Crawford added to his tally shortly after, from an identical situation, with the end result the same.

Full back Jones was then to get in on the action after a defensive kick by Port was gathered by the speedy 15 and ran 3/4 of the pitch, through numerous failed tackles to score. Jones also doubled his tally after some good work up front from the dominating pack lead by Robertson to take the half time score to 38 - 0

Early into the second half Knutsford added to their total following good work in the line from the Knutsford pack, the ball was spun out the backs and centre Walker scythed through to score under the posts.

Knutsford then switched off a little, and Sunlight camped on their line for a few minutes, but after a stern chat from captain Mooney, the players got back to basics and quickly added to their total.

Jones went on another mazy run for his hatrick following another defensive kick from Port which saw Elleray convert for the fifth time. Jones then set Maxwell up to score in the corner and the game was finished off with a converted try from James and Crawford also collecting his hatrick.

All in all a fantastic day for the team, with every player putting in a solid performance to be proud of and no fewer than 3 men could have been awarded the man of the match accolade.

  South Lancs/Cheshire 3 | 13th March | KNUTSFORD 33 v Congleton 10
Match report by Robin Maxwell

Knutsford looked to return to winning ways on Saturday, against local rivals Congleton, at Mereheath Lane. Knutsford dominated from the off and with their back line continuing to look impressive, the home side made several early breaks.

The youthful Knutsford backs seemed prepared to run the ball from anywhere on the pitch and were well marshalled and controlled by the imposing James at fly half. Knutsford were rewarded for their early dominance of territory and possession, as the evergreen Lockett continued his recent upturn in form, to round both the Congleton winger and full back to score in the right hand corner.

Knutsford looked to extended their lead in the opening quarter but were dogged by a lack of precision in the loose, as they struggled to exert any dominance at the ruck. Despite the lack of consistent ball Knutsford still looked superior to the visitors. The well-marshalled defence thwarted any Congleton attacks. Walker at inside centre led the defensive line with aplomb and was particularly destructive.

Ill discipline from Knutsford offered Congleton opportunities, and a missed penalty after 25 minutes should have acted as a catalyst to re-focus the home side, but Knutsford continued to be regularly penalised. Knutsford's woes continued on the 30 minute mark when Barnes was sent off. Congleton spent the remainder of the half close to the Knutsford line but were unable to cross the whitewash. Knutsford looked resilient and their determination was epitomised by their effort in the scrum, as their young front row of Page, Kemp and Hulbert dug in to prevent several attempted push overs at the set piece.

Congleton were rewarded for their pressure with a late penalty, reducing the score to 5-3 at half time.

Knutsford began the second half with confidence, knowing that their scrum was able to provide a platform from which to build. With Knutsford now playing downhill and with the wind at their backs they were able to easily make territorial gains, both James and Mooney pinning Congleton deep in their own half.

With territorial dominance Knutsford were being presented with the opportunity to launch meaningful attacks. The forwards had suddenly come to life and Robertson, Dunkerley and Dawson seemed to have gained renewed vigour with the ball in hand. Several destructive runs from Dawson drove Knutsford up the park, and Mooney beautifully picked out Lockett to complete his brace for the day. James converted the try and Knutsford lead 12-3 with 45 minutes played.

Minutes later Knutsford further extended their advantage. Following some strong scrummaging close to the Congleton line, the ball was fed to the backs and Walker capped off his man of the match performance with a well taken score under the posts.

Snook and Robertson continued to disrupt Congleton ball and seemed to make up for Congleton’s numerical advantage. This allowed Knutsford to become comfortable and they were now able to play with a confidence that had been missing in previous weeks.

Another Dawson run lead directly to another try for the home side. James fed the rampaging second row who barrelled over two tacklers to touch down from 20 metres. Mooney converted the kick and the home team now looked to have sealed victory.

With Knutsford in a strong position on the scoreboard and controlling possession and territory they were able to make several replacements. Heaney came on to replace Lockett and quickly made an impact on the game. Some superb handling from Robertson and Mooney released Crawford on the right wing, 35 metres out. He looked to have the pace to complete the score himself, but he drew the cover defence on to him and slipped the ball back inside to Heaney who cantered in to score under the posts.

Knutsford played out the remaining 10 minutes and were disappointed to conceded a late score, but both coach, Ryan Acton and the club’s Director of Rugby, Sam Fishburne were pleased with the performance and the result.

Knutsford will look to develop on this victory against Helsby next weekend at Mereheath Lane, 2.15 kick off.

South Lancs/Cheshire 3 | 6 March | Capenhurst 24 v Knutsford 14
Match report by Robin Maxwell

Following two weeks off Knutsford travelled to Capenhurst looking to build on their encouraging display against Holmes Chapel in their last outing. Knutsford’s youthful side started brightly and competed well at the breakdowns, with the back row of Higgins, Snook and Barnes combining well to slow down opposition ball.

Capenhurst struggled to dent Knutsford’s organised, tight defence and were forced to throw the ball wide in the early exchanges. Pressure from Walker and Heaney in the centres resulted in a dropped Capenhurst ball which fly half James hacked through from 40 metres to cooly score under the posts, with Mooney adding the conversion to put Knutsford 7-0 up after only 10 minutes.

After only 19 minutes Knutsford were dealt a blow when their captain, Oliver Mooney was forced off the field with an eye injury. This allowed Knutsford to introduce the returning Crawford to the centres. The away side contiued to be a menace in the loose, but as in previous weeks they were beginning to struggle in the set piece, espically the scrum.

Following a series of penalties Capenhurst leveled the score on the half hour mark. The home side elected to scrum a penalty from the 5 metre line and they were rewarded for their forward dominace with their number 8 scoring a push over try.

Knutsford responded well to this set back and continued to play the open game that suits them so well. The forwards continually stole ball at the breakdown, with Robertson being a menance that the oppostion could not contain. With 35 minutes on the clock Knutsford re-captured the lead. A strong scrum allowed Higgins to attack the blind side and feed scrum half Heaney, who put Rick Jones in to score from 25 metres. James converted the try and Knutsford went in at half time leading 14-7.

In the second half Knutsford tried to keep the game open and allow Capenhurst to play around the fringes and into the strong Knutsford defence. However the half was littered with errors and as a result this played to the strength of the strong Capenhurst scrum. Knutsford’s young front row of Hulbert, Kemp and Paige were given a strong examination by their much more experienced opposition. The Knutsford pack battled hard but were struggling to gain parity at the set piece.

A converted penalty 5 minutes into the half reduced Knutsford’s lead to 4 points. 15 minutes into the half Knutsford’s coach, Ryan Acton introduced Tom Fuller for his debut, in an attempt to shackle the Capenhurst number 8. As the game continued to become more fractious the error count continued to rise and the game descended into a succession of scrums.

Capenhurst were awared two penalty tries within the space of 15 minutes, following collapsed scrums close to Knutsford’s line. Knutsford felt that on both occasions they were awarded harshly. Following the game captain Mooney commented that some aspect of the scrum particularly the engagement and bind had not been scrutinised sufficiently by the officials and as a result enababled Capenhurst to build a solid platfrom at the scrum.

Knutsford were fortunate to stay in touch with Capenhust, as the home side continue to apply pressure on the Knutsford line. Some exceptional defence from the sides veteran Richard Lockett prevented the winger from touching down in the corner and then moments later he used all his experience to read the situation and come in from the wing to smother a marauding forward on the Knutsford line.

With 15 minutes reamining and Knutsford now trailing 24-14 Capenhurst were temporarily reduced to 14 men. This spurred Knutsford on. The forwards began to carry the ball strongly and possesion was quicky recycled. Powerful runs from Jones, Higgins and Dunkerley epitomised Knutsford’s new found determination. However for all the effort the away side were unable to convert and reduce the score.

Knutsford battled well and will look to take the positives forward into their next weekends fixture, which sees them entertain Congleton at Mereheath Lane, 2.15 kick off.

  South Lancs/Cheshire 3 | 13 February | Knutsford 5 v Homes Chapel 24
Match report by Robin Maxwell

Knutsford’s attempt to get back to winning ways took a blow on Saturday against local rivals Holmes Chapel.

The home side got off to a strong start and dominated both territory and possession from the start. Up front Knutsford were dominating in the scrum, and with Crawford returning at 13, the backs were looking threatening and lively. Chapel looked edgy and could not settle into their game.

Despite the Knutsford dominance, Chapel took the lead after their kicker converted his 2nd attempt of the day, and the away side would go further ahead with a converted try following a Knutsford error.

Knutsford then upped their game again, and after some fantastic work in the loose from their pack, the ball was flashed out the line for Crawford to finish off in the corner. Mooney’s conversion attempt was just wide of the mark.

Moments later, the Knutsford backline broke again, this time from their own try line, with Crawford running almost the length of the pitch but stalled just short of the line.

Half Time Knutsford 5 Holmes Chapel 10

Knutsford’s momentum was reduced after the restart, and this was impacted further when they were reduced to 14 men. With the Chapel pack clearly becoming frustrated with the pressure they were under at the set piece, they resorted to their fists and a mass brawl ensued. Chapel were left with 4 men on the deck and a sin bin for their No8. Knutsford’s No3 Owen was harshly shown red for retaliation.

This left Knutsford vulnerable up front and Chapel took advantage of this and ran in a try to extend their lead. With the last play of the game, Chapel drove over, and despite being short of the line the try was awarded to leave a flattering scoreline to the winners in what was a closely fought contest.

Knutsford have a lot of positives to take from the game. Tremendous performances from Paige in both the scrum and the loose, and once again Robertson dominated the lineout. James had a solid game at 10, Crawford showed what the team have been missing over the last few weeks, and Jones produced some trademark charges up the field. The sending off changed the shape of the game, and Knutsford can only wonder what might have been had the referee not been so harsh against them in his analysis following the fracas.

Knutsford 5 Holmes Chapel 24

  South Lancs/Cheshire 3 | 6 February | Linley 29 v Knutsford 5
Match report by Robin Maxwell

Knutsford travelled to Linley on Saturday for what was always going to be a tough encounter against one of the league contenders.

With confidence running low amongst the team after a bad run of results, Knutsford got off to a decent start with a fair share of both territory and possession in the the Linley half. However, the Knutsford cause took a blow when they conceded a try below the posts after their makeshift scrum lost one against the head.

Linley then started to dominate, and ran in 2 more tries and a conversion before half time, including a push over try from a 5 metre scrum.

Half Time Linley 19 Knutsford 5

Knutsford started the second half with intent, and their aggressive play paid off quickly when returning captain Mooney took advantage of a Linley handling error and won a kick and chase race to score in the corner.

This gave the Knutsford team a real lift, and some key players really started to turn it on. Higgins and Robertson were both making a difference up front with some tremendous charges, in addition young Barnes was having his best game to date for the 1sts.

However, all the pressure did not convert to points, and Linley put the game beyond reach, after being awarded a penalty which their kicker converted to put them 22 points to 5 ahead.

With the last play of the game, Linley scored another try after some comedy confusion in the Knutsford defence between Maxwell and James allowed their centre to breeze in under the posts to leave the final score at 29 points to 5 for the home side.

Some positives were to be taken from the game. With the influence of new coach Ryan Acton visible in patches of play, and if the team can take their second half performances into the first half, a good result should not be too far away for them.

Knutsford host local rivals Holmes Chapel in what will be another very tough game, with the home side looking to record their first win in their short history against their neighbours. Kick off 2.30pm. All support very welcome.

South Lancs/Cheshire 3 | 30 January | Ellesmere Port 13 v Knutsford 7
Match report by Robin Maxwell

Knutsford arrived at Ellesmere Port on Saturday looking to put a bad run of results behind them. After 2 weeks of losing 50 points, the focus was to get back to winning ways.

The game got underway, despite a very questionable pitch which was both frozen and waterlogged in areas. The first half was a very close contest, and as the sides traded blows, the scoreline remained in deadlock.

Knutsford's set piece looked in much better shape this week, and in particular the scrum was holding its own.

Knutsford also looked strong up front in the loose. Robertson, Edmonds and Higgins all showed some great ball carries and support for each other, and in defence Snook was proving to be a terror as always.

Knutsford's pressure eventually told and the deadlock was eventually broken with a trademark try from Knutsford, showing what the team are capable of when they switch on. The ball went through many hands before ball got to the veteran Lockett who opened up and beat his man and finished off near the corner. James converted the tough kick.

Port hit back at the worst possible time for Knutsford, when on the stroke of half time they broke the line and their winger finished off underneath the posts to level the scoring as the whistle went.

Half Time Ellesmere Port 7 Knutsford 7

Knutsford got the second half underway in a strong and positive fashion, and dominated the start of the half. However, they failed to convert the pressure into points, and this would prove to be their downfall.

Two harsh decisions from the referee allowed Ellesmere Port kickable opportunities which they duly took to put them 6 points ahead.

With 20 minutes remaining, Knutsford introduced the returning Mooney, and despite some positive moves they could not make their possession count and Port took victory and the points.

Next week Knutsford travel to Linley for what will be a tough encounter - Manager Sam Fishburne is expecting a strong turnout at training this week to work on the aspects that have been letting the side down over the last few weeks as the club look to halt the slide.

  South Lancs/Cheshire 3 | 23 January | Knutsford 12 v Prenton 50
Match report by Robin Maxwell

Knutsford entertained league challengers Prenton at Egerton on Saturday and for the second time this season Prenton racked up 50 points against them.

Prenton started brightly, and quickly took the lead with 3 points, after a dubious penalty decision from the referee. Their lead increased shortly after, when their openside broke 3 poor tackles from Knutsford to score under the posts.

Prenton then extended their lead with another try to put them 15 points ahead with only fifteen minutes gone, but Knutsford finally woke up and responded themselves. The ball was played out to the backs, and after Maxwell broke through the line, he fed Jones who put Hamilton in on the corner.

Knutsford then pressed on again, and with Prenton defending their try line, a Knutsford pass went astray and was intercepted by the Prenton winger, who ran the length of the pitch to score under the posts.

Half Time Knutsford 5 Prenton 22

The second half was much the same as the first, with Knutsford showing signs of positive play in patches. However, with the Prenton set piece much stronger and better drilled, the Knutsford defence was being constantly put under pressure and as a result they leaked further tries and penalties.

Knutsford notched up one try in the second half, when after a prolonged period of attack on the Prenton line, the ball went down the blindside and Heaney finished off in the corner. From an near impossible angle, James slotted the conversion.

Knutsford will look to stop the rot on Saturday when they travel to Ellesmere Port, kick off 2.30pm. www.knutsfordrugby.com

  South Lancs/Cheshire 3 | 16 January | Ramsey IoM 39 v Knutsford 8
Match report by Robin Maxwell

Knutsford went down to league leaders Ramsey on Saturday; however the scoreline did not reflect the game which was a closely fought contest in the main.

The game started at a frantic pace, and Ramsey were first on the score sheet after Knutsford gave away a penalty in a kickable position and the Ramsey fly-half made no mistake in converting the opportunity. Ramsey then increased their lead with a converted try after some good work from their backs.

Knutsford then came back into the game and were the dominant team for the rest of the half. The pressure exerted eventually told, when captain Mooney won a penalty and then converted the 3 points.

Knutsford continued to pressure, but then suffered a blow just short of half time when they lost Mooney to a knee injury and hooker Kemp.

Half Time Ramsey 13 Knutsford 3

Knutsford started the second half strongly, and could have closed the gap with a penalty in front of the posts but with regular kicker Mooney off, Walker’s attempt was well short of the posts. With the travelling side continuing to press, Knutsford suffered a killer punch when Ramsey scored under the posts off an interception after the Ramsey backs had pressed high in defence. Knutsford’s woes were further compounded when in the space of a couple of minutes Ramsey scored another breakaway try and Knutsford lost centre Lindsay to a serious ankle injury. All at the club wish him a full and speedy recovery.

Despite being down to 14 players, the away side continued to press, and were rewarded with a terrific try. A steal from Robertson in the pack set the ball up for the backline. The ball was fired out along the line, going through no fewer than 4 sets of hands before Walker finished off in the corner.

The numbers advantage, alongside some questionable refereeing decisions saw Ramsey finish with a couple more breakaway tries, one of which was converted to put the game well out of reach.

Overall, this was a good game of rugby to watch. Ramsey are a well drilled side and deservedly sit at the top of the league. Knutsford Rugby Club would like to thank Ramsey Rugby Club for their kind hospitality on the club’s first trip to the Island.

  South Lancs/Cheshire 3 | 12 December | Helsby 3 v Knutsford 39
Match report by Robin Maxwell

Knutsford resumed their league campaign with an emphatic win over Helsby at the weekend.

The game got underway with a quick exchange of penalties. Helsby struck first after a Knutsford infringement just outside the 22. Straight from the kick off, Knutsford responded with 3 points, again from just outside of the 22. This settled Knutsford into their game, and with a much improved scrum creating a strong platform, the Knutsford backline had a chance to show their qualities and they did not disappoint.

The first try of the game came about after a prolonged period of Knutsford pressure. After a kick and chase from Heaney, Mooney went down the blindside from the back of the ensuing ruck and after a strong run he offloaded to Lockett who finished it off in the corner.

Before the end of the first half, Knutsford doubled their try count. The ball came out of a ruck and went through the hands of no fewer than four Knutsford players before the returning Layzell finished the move off.

Half Time Helsby 3 Knutsford 15

Knutsford started the second half lethargically, and it took a special individual effort from young winger Clawson to get the team going again. Clawson received the ball on the half way line and beat no fewer than 5 of the opposition before finishing off close to the posts for Mooney to convert.

This kicked Knutsford into action, and after a well worked back line move which saw Maxwell break through the Helsby line, Knutsford were eventually stopped just short of the Helsby line. From the resulting ruck, Mooney collected and went over the line.

Clawson then collected his second try of the game with an almost identical try to cap off a terrific performance from the emerging talent. The final try of the game was finished off by debutant Hamilton who finished off after the ball was quickly shifted out the back line.

This was a good performance from Knutsford, with all the players at times showing what they are capable of. Special mention goes to Clawson with his 2 fine solo tries, and in the forwards the front row started to come together which helped set a strong platform for the backs.

Knutsford will be hoping for more of the same next week when they travel to Linley with a 2.15pm kick off for what is sure to be a tough fixture.

  South Lancs/Cheshire 3 | 5 December | Knutsford 20 v Parkonians 0
Match report by Robin Maxwell

Knutsford eventually overcame Parkonians with a blitzing second half performance.

This Cheshire plate contest got underway with an atmosphere you would expect from the game which was a meaningless fixture with both sides already out of the cup. The first half had very little of note until just on the stroke of half time there was a fracas between Knutsford’s normally mild mannered veteran centre Lockett and a Park prop – both men seeing yellow.

The half time team talk from captain Mooney seemed to kick the Knutsford men into action and they began to dominate around the park. The pressure started to tell on Park and they gave away a number of penalties. Mooney took advantage with a well taken kick from just inside the Park half to get the scoreboard moving.

Knutsford then moved up a gear and scored 3 quick tries. First, after a number of pick and go’s the ball came out the line and went through the hands of Maxwell, James and Lockett before Crawford finished in the corner. Then James danced through to score off a quick tap penalty from Mooney and finally Fishburne finished off the scoring after some solid work from the pack.

This was a positive performance from Knutsford, with a good mix of experienced and young players combining well in the second half. Fishburne, Higgins, Perry and Robertson in the pack, Clawson, James, Crawford and Jones in the backs all with very strong performances. These shall hopefully be carried through to next week when they take on Helsby at home in the league. Kick off 2.30pm.

  South Lancs/Cheshire 3 | 28 November | Congleton 20 v Knutsford 11
Match report by Robin Maxwell

Knutsford went down to Congleton on Saturday on a chilly day, with the playing field a rainsoaked mudbath.

Knutsford started the game with a youthful team, with no fewer than 7 players under the age of 20 in the starting line-up.

The game got underway and shortly into it there was an exchange of penalties with pressure from both teams. Mooney converted 2 of 3 attempts and Congleton responded with 3 points of their own, as neither side really took control of the game.

Knutsford then lost their influential centre Lindsay after what looked like a nasty head injury but thankfully was not as serious as first thought.

With a makeshift pack, Knutsford started to struggle at the set piece; in addition the muddy conditions combined with Congleton stretching the rulebook in regards to an early shove meant the home side benefited from a lot of possession.

Congleton’s set piece dominance eventually paid off as the half wore on when they capitalised and scored a converted try after a strong run from their backline to make the halftime score 10 points to 7.

The second half got underway with the Knutsford scrum looking more robust but once again Congleton made any possession they had count, firstly converting a penalty in front of the posts, then their number 8 scored from a push over try which was also converted.

This finally got the away side into action with them dominating both territory and possession and the last 20 minutes of the game saw them enjoying their best period of the game. Their hard work eventually paid off with 4 minutes remaining on the clock. After a number of pick and go’s, Knutsford reached the Congleton 5 metre line. Crawford collected from the base of yet another ruck and dived over for a try. Mooney’s conversion attempt went just wide.

Unfortunately it was all too little too late and the try was to be the final points of the game.

Despite a disappointing result, there were some positives from the game with Paige making a very positive debut in the front row and Crawford deputising well at No8.

  South Lancs/Cheshire 3 | 14 November | Knutsford 12 v Capenhurst 0
Match report by Robin Maxwell

Knutsford welcomed back five key players this Saturday as the entertained Capenhurst, on a wet and windy afternoon at Mereheath Lane.

The opening exchanges were littered with errors as both sides struggled to adapt to the wintery conditions. Knutsford were the quicker to acclimatise to the rain and soon found their feet, with the forwards carrying the ball strongly. Fishburne, Higgins and Owen on their return epitomised Knutsford’s game plan with direct running and strong ball carrying laying a platform from which fly half James was able to control terrioritory.

As Knutsford continued to control possession and terriority they were duely rewarded with a penalty in front of the posts, which Mooney slotted over to put Knutsford into a 3-0 lead.

Knutsford continued to exert pressure on the Capenhurst line and Clawson was unlucky to score on his first start for the side. Shortly after Higgins was held up over the line, but Knutsford’s dominance in the loose was rewarded with two further penalties and extended their lead to 9-0 with 30 minutes on the clock.

As the first half drew towards it completion, Capenhurst were presented with an opportunity to get back into the game. The Knutsford pack stood up to a stern examination as Capenhurst attempted to a push over try from a five metre scrum. An organised back line defence, marshalled by Edmonds and Crawford, thwarted the visitors final attack of the half, as Knutsford went into the half time break leading 9-0.

Knutsford began the second half in a similar fashion to the first, and continued to control field position with Mooney and James kicking well to the corners and pinning Capenhurst back into their 22.

Robertsons persistance at the lineout was rewarded as Knutsford began to win ball from the Capernhurst set piece. A strong carry from Edmonds and repeated phases of forward play result in Knutsford being awarded a penalty in front of the posts as Capenhurst were caught offside at the ruck. Mooney converted the penalty to take the score to 12-0, with thirty minutes remaining.

Capenhurst began to resort to a kicking game and debutant Hamilton looked assured under the high ball, as he calmly collected several testing midfield kicks. Knutsford looked organised in defence and held firm as Capenhurst again exerted pressure on the home side’s line. Fifteen minutes of pressure from the visitors failed to yield any points and Knutsford managed to play ut the last ten minutes in the Capenhurst half, controling possesion as they looked to run down the clock for a hard fought victory.

  South Lancs/Cheshire 3 | 31 October | Holmes Chapel 60 v Knustford 26
Match report by Robin Maxwell

Knutsford came off second best in their weekend game with local rivals Holmes Chapel. The game did not take long to get going with Chapel registering their first points with an easy taken penalty after a Knutsford infringement. Knutsford responded straight from the kick off, and as they rushed the Chapel backs, Maxwell charged down a kick, collected and went over for a try.

This was to turn out to be Knutsford’s only points of the half, as a combination of very poor set plays and missed tackles from the visitors, along with some well drilled moves would see Chapel run in no fewer than 4 tries and another penalty, which almost ended the game as a contest.

The second half would see a much better performance from Knutsford despite suffering yet another bout of injuries to 3 of their players, an unfortunate issue which has plagued them all too often this season.

Knutsford managed to run in 3 tries in the second half. A trademark jinky run from James saw the out-half go in under the posts after some strong running in the loose from the Knutsford pack.  Another phase of strong pick and go’s from the Knutsford pack would allow Perry to go in under the posts. Knutsford’s other try came from debutant Clawson, who read a poor pass from the Chapel back line, intercepted and ran the length of the pitch to score under the posts.

Despite the positives of their attacking play, Knutsford were still frail at the set piece and in defence, and, alongside some unfortunate breaks, Chapel scored another 4 tries and a penalty in the second half to seal a convincing win.

Knutsford have a week off next week, and they will hope that the break will give enough time to allow some of their key players to get back to fitness for their next game, at home to Capenhurst on the 14 November.

  South Lancs/Cheshire 3 | 24 October | Helsby 27 v Knustford 13
Match report by Robin Maxwell

Knutsford’s poor form in the Cheshire plate continued on Saturday with an away defeat to Helsby. With the wind at their back, Helsby started the game dominating possession and territory, but not looking likely to score. Eventually, Helsby’s dominance up front paid off, when their No8 picked up and crossed the line after they had driven the scrum a full 15 metres. With 20 minutes on the clock, Knutsford were dealt a blow when they lost their captain Mooney, suffering from flu, replaced by debutant Liam Heaney who would go on to impress throughout the game.

Knutsford kicked into action and had their best spell of the match. After a period of territorial advantage, Jones bulldozed his way over the line after strong running. Shortly after, Knutsford added to the score with a penalty from Walker in front of the posts after yet another infringement from a very temperamental Helsby side. In fact their very dangerous high tackling would see them have 2 men sin binned during the course of the game and it could have been more.

Before the half time whistle, Helsby struck again after their scrum half broke the Knutsford defence and had plenty of back up when required. Half Time Helsby 12 Knutsford 8

Knutsford suffered a further injury setback when Hulbert had to go off after a neck injury, and in addition Edmonds and Crawford didn’t finish the game and it looks like the both of them could be out for sometime.

After the injuries, Knutsford were reduced to 14 men and the Helsby lads used their numbers advantage and ran in a couple of tries and a penalty which ended the game as a contest

Knutsford had some consolation with the last play of the game, which almost the entire team were involved in. From a tap penalty, Robertson made some good ground, the ball then went through the hands and eventually Perry offloaded to Malaspina who put Maxwell in on the corner to finish it off.

Knutsford have an important fixture next week, travelling in a league fixture to local rivals Holmes Chapel, with both teams looking strong in the league. It should be a cracker!

  South Lancs/Cheshire 3 | 17 October | Knutsford 27 v Ellesmere Port 24
Match report by Robin Maxwell

Knutsford made heavy work of their victory at Egerton on Saturday. The hosts started strongly but couldn’t take advantage of their territorial superiority, and in the end Port punished them with a well taken try in the early part of the first half. This was a wake up call for Knutsford, and coupled with the appearance off the bench from Robertson, they quickly responded with a double from centre Crawford. The first coming off a terrific jinking run from James, with the fly half eventually off loading to Crawford and the 13 finished it off. The second was actually from a Port set piece. The Knutsford back line rushed their defence, which lead to a forced pass which just wasn’t on, and Crawford read it well, intercepted and ran half the pitch to score under the posts. Mooney converted what would be his only points of the day with the boot.

Half Time Knutsford 12 Ellesmere Port 5

Knutsford started the second half in a dominant mood, and quickly racked some points onto the board. After some strong running from Knutsford’s back line, the move was halted just short of the line. Mooney collected from the resulting ruck and bundled over the line to score.

Knutsford made a change, with the veteran Owen coming on, and the big prop made an impact on the game in many ways, both positive and negative. After another charge up the field, Owen collected the ball just short of the line, and unusually passed out to Perry who finished the move off in the corner.

Owen was rewarded shortly after with his own try, again finding himself hanging at the back of a ruck 3 metres out and he tumbled over for the try.

A couple of penalty opportunities went a begging from Knutsford, with Mooney just not finding his kicking range on the day.

Port then made a change themselves, and this almost tipped the game in their favour after a fantastic comeback by the visitors, and a hat trick from their no 8 sub. All 3 came from up front, and despite some great defending from Knutsford, they just couldn’t stop the barrage coming from Port. Their cause was not helped when Owen got himself binned for persistent fouling with nine to go.

In the end, Knutsford held out to take maximum points and keep them towards the top of what is looking like a very competitive league. Next week they travel to Helsby in the Cheshire plate, kick off 3pm.

South Lancs/Cheshire 3 | 3rd October | PRENTON 50 v Knutsford 0
Match report by Robin Maxwell

Knutsford’s unbeaten start to the league campaign came to a halt on Saturday in dramatic fashion. With an injury ravaged squad, Knutsford headed to Prenton with no fewer than ten first team regular players missing. To make matters worse, two late call offs on the morning of the game meant that two of the starting fifteen were playing with significant injuries.

Nonetheless, the opposition can only beat what is in front of them, and for the first 20 minutes of the game the Knutsford team did not front up, whereas the Prenton lads were clearly up for a game against the joint league leaders. Poor tackling and a lack of communication between the players meant that Prenton were 24 points up within as many minutes.

Finally, Knutsford started to come alive and made a competition of the second part of the first half, with everyone picking their game up. In fact, Knutsford started to dominate in the loose and spent a lot of this period in the Prenton half. Despite this, the closest Knutsford came to scoring was with a Mooney penalty from long range which fell just short and the same man hit the post with a speculative drop goal shortly after.

Half time Prenton 24 Knutsford 0

The second half commenced much the same as the first with Prenton scoring an early try. This was enough to kick Knutsford into gear again, and once again they spent fifteen minutes pressuring the Prenton defence but with no end result.

As the makeshift Knutsford team tired, Prenton once again showed their class, running in 3 tries in quick succession to end the game with the final score of 50 points to nil for the home side.

Overall, this was a day to forget for the Knutsford boys, but some positives were taken from the game. A strong performance from both Dunkerley and Williams on their full debuts, a solid effort from Crawford at 13 and the return of Perry gives manager Todman some additional options for the upcoming games. Next week Knutsford travel to Parkonians in the Cheshire Plate, kick off 3pm.

South Lancs/Cheshire 3 | 10 October | Parkonians 29 v Knutsford 19
Match report by Robin Maxwell

Knutsford almost pulled off a great escape, with a monumental comeback on Saturday but in the end it was too little too late.

Once again the squad was ravaged with injuries and another last minute withdrawal left the Cheshire men starting the game with 14 players.

Parkonians quickly got to work and had ran in three tries within the first ten minutes as Knutsford failed to get to grips with the game. Too many missed tackles meant it was all too easy for the Birkenhead outfit and their forwards were dominating in both the loose and at the scrum. Knutsford had a couple of positive moves and runs but Parkonians took advantage of their overall dominance with yet another avoidable try which took the score to 24 points to nil at halftime.

Things were too get worse for Knutsford, as they went down to 13 men after an injury to Fishburne on the stroke of half time, and as the second half got underway they leaked another try in the corner when Parkonians loaded the blindside and their numbers advantage told.

At this point something triggered in the Knutsford boys, and with James finding some good positional kicks, the forwards started to dominate the ageing Parkonians. Dawson had a strong run before offloading to James, he then fed Maxwell who put his centre partner Lindsay in for his first try for the club. Mooney converted. 29 – 7

Knutsford again went on the attack and when Mooney kicked through a loose ball, the Parkonians defence missed the ball and Maxwell was there to touch down.

The away team had really got their tails up and it was hard to tell who was playing with 13 men as the Knutsford pack overran their opposite numbers again and again in the loose. After a number of pick and drives from the Knutsford forwards, they found themselves just short of the line. Maxwell picked up from the back of the ruck 5 metres out, and found the gap to go over for his second of the day. Mooney slotted the conversion to leave the final score 29-19.

Overall there was plenty to forget about in the first half but the second half was littered with positive performances. Williams put in a great effort in covering both wings, superb defensive work from Lindsay and some penetrating runs from Dawson and Dunkerley has given the management plenty of food for thought for next weeks league game with Ellesmere Port at home (Kick Off 3pm) when many of the injured are expected to make a return to the squad.

South Lancs/Cheshire 3 | 26th September | KNUTSFORD 15 v Ramsey IoM 15
Match report by Robin Maxwell

Knutsford escaped from Egerton on Saturday with a hard fought draw in a thrilling top of the table match. The contest started fairly evenly, but Ramsey drew first blood with an early penalty in front of the posts. The game then swung in Knutsford’s direction. A double miss pass from Mooney to Walker saw Jones and Maxwell rucking over and quick distribution from Mooney to Layzell saw the number 8 put winger Davenport in the corner for an unconverted try.

Davenport almost doubled his try count for the day after a strong run from Coulbeck who then fed Dawson but Dawson’s pass to Davenport was adjudged to be forward.

Shortly after Ramsey put themselves ahead again when their centre went over the line after they loaded the blindside and outnumbered the Knutsford defence. The conversion was missed.

Mooney then reduced the deficit for Knutsford after converting a penalty following some good running from the returning Fishburne. Overall, the first half was controlled by the away side, they were dominating in the line and scrum and Ramsey powered home their advantage just before half time. A combination of some nice running from Ramsey and poor Knutsford defending allowed them to score under the posts and the try was duly converted.

Half Time Knutsford 8 Ramsey 15

The second half was generally dominated by Knutsford but they could not convert the positive pressure into points as the Ramsey defence stood firm and the game looked like it was heading for a victory for the Manx men.

However the game came to life again with less than 5 minutes left on the clock. Knutsford surged forward with a series of pick and go rucking. Eventually, with the Ramsey defence in disarray, from the back of a ruck Maxwell picked out Davenport who timed his pass to Jones for the big centre to squeeze in on the corner. From the touchline Mooney somehow managed to convert. With 2 minutes left on the clock the score was 12 – 15

The Knutsford team realised that it was win or bust time and again they charged into the Ramsey half. However, after a series of penalty awards which Knutsford attempted to convert into a winning try, it seemed their luck was out as Ramsey won a turnover ball in their own 22. With time up, all that was required was a steady head to kick the ball into touch and the game was over. Unfortunately nerves got the better of one of the Ramsey 15 as he deliberately passed the ball straight out – a penalty to Knutsford on the touchline! Time for captain Mooney to step up and he duly converted the penalty from a near impossible angle to send the large home crowd into raptures!

Full Time Knutsford 15 Ramsey 15

Commenting on the game Mooney said that Ramsey probably deserved the win, but he was very proud of the second half performance that his players had produced after what was an unacceptable first half. The draw did come at a cost to Knutsford with the influential duo of Coulbeck and Edmonds going off with concerning injuries along with young Kemp who was cementing his place in the front row but now faces a lengthy lay off.

  South Lancs/Cheshire 3 | 19th September | KNUTSFORD 53 v Helsby 14
Match report by Robin Maxwell

Knutsford continued their winning run with a convincing victory at home on Saturday in the Cheshire Plate. The opening 10 minutes of the game did not reflect what was to follow as Helsby started the match on the front foot and had Knutsford encamped in their own 22. Eventually, captain Mooney kicked them to a good field position. From the resulting lineout, Knutsford’s backs rushed Helsby, and after a great tackle and turnover ball from Jones, Mooney put Thompson into the corner to put the hosts 5 nil ahead.

Shortly after, following a near miss in the corner from Edmonds, Mooney took a quick 22 drop deep into Helsby’s half. Knutsford’s defence again rushed and turned the ball over and Mooney was there to finish the move to make it 10 nil.

The tries were now coming thick and fast, and after Kemp had won a scrum against the head on Helsby’s 5 metre line, the ball came out the back line for Lockett to finish under the posts. Out half Elleray converted. 17 – 0.

A further period of pressure from Knutsford saw Dawson go over the line in his first start for the 1’s this season. Again Elleray converted. 24 – 0.

Before the half was over Knutsford pilled further misery on Helsby. A quick tap penalty from Mooney on Helsby’s 22 and with numbers over, Mooney looped a pass to Coulbeck for the second row man to go over. Elleray converted.

Half Time Knutsford 31 Helsby 0

The second half started with Knutsford consolidating their position with a well taken penalty kick from Elleray. However, after a scrappy lineout in the Knutsford 22, Helsby stole the ball and their scrum half darted in below the posts to score a converted try. 34 - 7.

Any hopes of a Helsby recovery were dashed after a prolonged period of pressure by Knutsford in the Helsby 22 saw Edmonds pounce on a loose ball at the back of a ruck and the big number 8 powered through 2 tackles to score under the posts. 41 - 7.

The match then turned a little scrappy, but eventually another period of pressure from Knutsford, in particular some good ball carrying from man of the match Robertson saw them awarded a penalty on the Helsby 5. The combination of Mooney and Coulbeck again combined for the latter to crash over for his second of the game. 48 – 7.

The game had 2 more tries, one for either side, the final try for Knutsford saw Mooney score in the corner after another win against the head by Kemp and a strong pick and go by debutant Dunkerley.

Full time Knutsford 53 Helsby 14

This Saturday Knutsford’s 1sts and 2nds are at home in a double header, the seconds against Stockport, while the firsts face Ramsey in the league – both teams have 100% records, something’s got to give!

  South Lancs/Cheshire 3 | 12th September | Port Sunlight 12 v KNUTSFORD 24
Match report by Robin Maxwell

Knutsford played their second league game of the new season on a red hot day at Port Sunlight, with the hard fast pitch looking like it could well suit their new running style of play.

There were a few forced changes to last week's winning team with Kemp coming in at hooker, Davenport getting his first start in over a year and Selkirk featuring at 10.

Both teams spent opening 10 minutes trying to get the upper hand and control field position. Sunlight kicked a lot of ball deep trying to pin Knutsford into their 22, but some steady play from the three quarter combination of Lockett, Davenport and Crawford meant that Knutsford dealt well with their kicking game. Strong running and deep return kicks ensured most of the first 15 minutes were played in the middle third of the field.

Knutsford's dominance at the lineout allowed them to set up rolling mauls and make good progress, with strong runs from the centres creating clean ball off the set plays.

As a result they deservedly scored first, with Snook getting his first try for the 1st's following several well constructed mauls off yet another excellent line out. Snook peeled off the maul which was already at the line to flop over unopposed to score.

Sunlight continued to look threatening throughout the first period and were only prevent from raiding the Knutsford 22 by a well organized defence. Sunlight continued their kicking strategy and were lucky not to be punished by the veteran Lockett, who collected a kick 20 metres inside his own half, beat the first man and then scythed through 4 other tackles, finally being brought to a halt entering the Sunlight 22.

Knutsford began to exert themselves on Sunlight and scored again on the 30 minute markafter some big forward carries down the right flank. With quick recycling and constant phase play stretching the Sunlight defence Selkirk was allowed to stroll over unimpeded under the sticks to take the Knutsford lead to 14-0.

Knutsford stretched their lead on the half time mark. A good kick and chase left Sunlight's defenders isolated and resulted in a penalty. A quick tap by Mooney result in him scoring under the posts, to leave Knutsford 19-0 at half time.

Knutsford failed to capitalise on their strong position in the second half, Sunlight controlled field position and Knutsford spent the first 20 minutes of the half entrenched on their own 22. Ill discipline from Knutsford was also starting to take its toll under the pressure and Crawford was sin binned with 17 minutes remaining.

Sunlight were finally rewarded for their pressure. Knutsford's stretched defense allowed their scrum half to break around the fringes and feed the supporting inside centre to score under the sticks, 19-7 with 15 minutes to play.

Knutsford looked tired and heads dropped. They needed a spark to re-ignite their performance and with 10 to play Bond stole the ball from a Sunlight maul. Following the steal, one of the Sunlight players questioned the legality of Bond's play and were dually dispatched to the sin bin for the remainder of the game.

With the teams on level numbers again, Knutsford sealed their victory after another turn over in Sunlight's 22 allowed Robertson to smash the ball up the middle of the defence. Fast recycling saw the backs with acres of space to play in, and Lockett was released to score in the corner.

Sunlight scored with the final play to finish 24-12 but Knutsford looked good for their victory. Despite not being at their best, Knutsford managed to control the game and the score board. Improved set pieces, with hooker Kemp winning man of the match gave Knutsford a reliable and consistent platform from which to build towards the winning result.

Knutsford's next game is at home to Helsby in the Cheshire Cup, 19th September, kick off 3pm. All supporters welcome.

  South Lancs/Cheshire 3 | 5th September | KNUTSFORD 23 v Parkonions 8
Match report by Robin Maxwell

Knutsford Rugby Clubin their first game at their new home and pitch at Egerton Youth Club got their league campaign off on the front foot with what turned out to be a convincing win in the end. They got off to a strong start and were rewarded early on with two well taken penalties from captain Mooney to put them 6 points to nil ahead. Parkonians then started to dominate up front for a period and after responding with a penalty, they then scored from a five metre scrum through an aggressive charge from their strong No 8.to make the score 6 points to 8. This was an appropriate wake up call for Knutsford and they responded well with some tremendous work up front from the second row combination of Robertson and man of the match Coulbeck. Knutsford were awarded two more penalties, one which was converted again by Mooney and with the last play of the first half he attempted a speculative effort from halfway which fell short and wide.

Half time - Knutsford 9 Parkonians 8

The second half got underway with both sides showing strong running and defence on occasions.Knutsford's flankers Edmonds and Snook started to click, No 8 Layzell was winning his fair share in the lineout and with the backs getting good ball, the new centre pairing of Ratcliffe and Jones put in a series of powerful runs which resulted in a penalty 25 metres from the try line. A quick thinking tap from Mooney and some stylish jinking put him under the posts and he subsequently converted his own try.

Knutsford picked up the pace with renewed vigour and the forwards and backs start to link together well producing some exciting periods of play, but it was the quality of Knutsford’s defence, and in particular new signing Ratcliffe that would create the second try as the rush defence was taking its toll on Parkonians and this hard work paid off with an interception and score under the posts for another off season signing Rick Jones. The try was duly converted leaving the final score at 23-8 to Knutsford. The final 10mins of the game wasn’t without incident with the loss of the Parkonians No.8 to a blood injury and near miss from Parkonians after a moment of madness by Knutsford flanker Snook which resulted in a yellow card.

  South Lancs/Cheshire 3 | 30th August | Holmes Chapel 29 v Knutsford 7
Match report by Robin Maxwell

Knutsford Rugby Club kicked off the new season last Saturday with a tricky opening fixture away to local rivals Holmes Chapel in the Cheshire Plate.  Although the Knutsford squad have had a solid pre-season, the lack of game time was evident as they were slow to get going in this highly competitive match.

Knutsford were further hampered by the loss of influential blind-side flanker Chris Perry, who was injured during the warm up. Holmes Chapel, helped no doubt by their three pre-season warm up matches, looked well organised in their set piece play and were not afraid to run the ball into the Knutsford midfield.  Some sloppy defence by Knutsford around the fringes of the breakdown allowed Holmes Chapel to make ground and spread the ball wide to score three unanswered trys in the first half.

However, as the first half went on Knutsford started to find some rhythm and made breaks through the impressive openside flanker, Edmonds, and powerful number eight, Hardman.  Unfortunately, Knutsford could not make late pressure in the first half count and went in at half time 17-0 down.

Some stern words at half time made all the difference as the Knutsford players realised they had taken too long to get going in the match.  Although Holmes Chapel scored early, the second half was a much more even battle, with Knutsford's scrum performing solidly, thanks to some good work by the Knutsford front row and particularly loose-head prop Callum Hulbert.  Further strong defensive work by the Knutsford midfield partnership of Ratcliffe and Lockett kept the pressure on Holmes Chapel, although Knutsford failed to secure enough phases of play to build significant pressure in attack.

Knutsford's best scoring opportunity of the second half came when the captain, Mooney, showed a useful turn of speed to break the Holmes Chapel defence, but unfortunately, the final pass did not go to hand. Knutsford kept up the pressure and Mooney eventually scored from a quick tap penalty to capitalise on some characteristic ill-discipline from the Holmes Chapel forwards.  Walker converted for Knutsford to make the final score 29-7 and leave Knutsford with plenty to work on in training this Thursday before the first home fixture of the season against Parkonians in the South Lancashire / Cheshire 3 League.
