About the FSA
The Foundation for Sport and the Arts was formed in July 1991, to channel funds generated by
the football pools into sport and the arts. Following the demise, at the end of March 2004, of
the agreement with the Government whereby that funding was committed, the Foundation has
maintained its close relationship with Sportech PLC, the owner of Littlewoods, Vernons and
Zetters Pools.
All awards made by the Foundation are now sourced from its reserves, and the Trustees have
decided to deplete those reserves over the next four years. This will mean the closure of the
Foundation at the end of March 2012. In addition, from April 2009 no further unsolicited
applications for funding will be accepted.
Despite the pending closure, the awarding policy remains the same. Grants offered by the
Trustees aim to support and promote sport and the arts in their many forms, and to help people
at every level of attainment to pursue their interests in these fields. Trustees are particularly
keen to ensure that young people are given the opportunity to take part in and enjoy activities
which can then engage them for life.
For the remainder of our existence, it is very important to us that we continue to offer a friendly
and non-bureaucratic reception to inquiries, and from feedback received over the years we
believe that our rating is high on both counts. The small team here tries to make life as easy as
possible for those who come to us for help. Although, unfortunately, this includes giving
disappointing news to the unlucky ones, we have been able to bring some great joy, as this
Report shows.
